The Paris Wife

Socratic Question #3

In the novel The Paris Wife, Ernest travels to many countries for job opportunities and to have his writings published. Do you know of anyone who has travelled abroad for work? Did it help them succeed in their career? Also, do you believe this to be the only way to succeed in your career?

  1. I don’t really know of anyone that has really travelled abroad for work. I suppose many people will travel to an extent for conferences or meetings, but I don’t really know of anyone that has travelled abroad in the way you’ve described it. I definitely don’t believe it is the only way to succeed in a career since many people are successful without travelling abroad. The key to success isn’t travelling. If it was, everyone would be travelling. I believe that key to success is hard and smart work. The reason I ay smart work is because hard work alone can be extremely inefficient. For example, studying for a math test, you can practice one question over and over for 12 hours, but what good will that do when it comes time for the exam? You need to know how to prioritize, and as long as you are of at least averae intelligence, you can be extremely successful. In addition, intelligence and hardwork alone will not usually lead to the success that could be possible. Social skills can prove to be much more valuable than spending all of your time learning new things since it will aid in communication in the future. Without communication, there will be little chance of advancement. So in summary, I do not know anyone who has travelled abroad for work, and I do not believe it to be the key to success.
